Showing too many ads can

To show ads on your website you can use a large number of solutions. With these solutions you can control how many ads are shown. Or you can let the ad networks do this for you.

A website can be monetized in many methods. Ads are not only often a reliable method, but with the right amount of traffic can also be very profitable. However, don't expect a website with a few thousand visitors in the month to earn a lot just from ads.

To be profitable with a website you not only need to attract a lot of traffic to your website, but also the right traffic. With a Dutch-language website, of course, you draw traffic mainly from the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname. But with an English website you can attract traffic from all over the world. Different countries have a higher profit margin for the advertisements. Therefore, this is important to know where your traffic comes from, and how they experience your website.

Visitors who are shown meaningful ads are also more likely to click on ads. Therefore, ad networks like Google are smart in this to be able to show meaningful and relevant ads.

What options are there to show ads on your website

There are several options available to show ads within your website hosting, this can be done with various ad networks. Both Dutch and Worldwide. And within those ad networks, you can also often select how many ads a visitor will eventually see. It is often important to the user experience of a website how many ads are desired. Many users today also have an ad blocker active within their web browser. These tools block all ads and therefore no ads can be shown.

However, the majority of users do not have an ad blocker active, and thus ads can be shown.

Google AdSense is the largest ad network that has a low barrier to activate on a website. What often a lot of ad networks have is a requirement for the number of traffic that comes to the website each month. For example, 10,000 sessions per month are required to join most ad networks. And some exclusive networks require 100,000 to 500,000 monthly sessions to qualify. Often the rule is that with these types of more exclusive networks you also earn more than you would once you were still using Google AdSense.

How many ads are too many - An answer from Google

The other day in a webmaster podcast / interview John Mueller from Google was asked about what exactly is the limit of ads. This was obviously not explained in clear text, as Google likes to keep its hand cards close to its chest. But it was explained with a number of things that Google takes into account when ranking websites with a lot of ads.

The main thing is that the user experience of a visitor on the website has priority with every update of the search algorithm. What visitors want is the information they are looking for and a pleasant experience. This is looked at with the following algorithms.

  • Page layout algorithm
  • Page speed / Page speed algorithm- ·
  • Core Web vitals

What you see from this answer is that it looks primarily at the user experience. If a website is full of ads the page speed will be drastically reduced, there will be less content to read and hidden behind ads, and the bounce rate will be higher. All indications that a website is less likely to rank first on Google.

What is mentioned next is that no websites are completely removed from Google just for the reason that you have more ads on your website, or a bad user interface. You see, a lot of different things are looked at for ranking. And this should not be seen as a final judgment. Keep in mind, however, that this is looked at more and more.

Measuring user experience with tools like Microsoft Clarity

To see exactly how visitors interact with your website it is useful to install a tool for this. This can be done very well with a tool like Microsoft Clarity. Previously covered in a blog post, this tool shows you exactly how a user finds his way around your website. You can see this through heatmaps, which show how users click and hover. And you can see this through whole session playbacks, where you can see exactly how a user is doing on your website.

You can then use this information to make improvements to the website, for example to improve the loading time with an SSD hosting package, or to show fewer ads to better retain users.
