Counteract SPAM

Stop SPAM in the mail

We happened to see it pass by again, an email pretending to be Marktplaats. Malicious people are getting more and more elaborate in order to imitate this as well as possible to make you fall for it. Before clicking on a link you should get used to hovering over it with your mouse. Then you'll see where you're going. This is the way it's done for almost every big name you know. From WeTransfer to phantom invoices from the SIDN. It is important to arm yourself against this with a number of measures you can take. Let's go through them in this blog post to refresh your memory.

DKIM

A DKIM certificate can be created in for the domain. This is an extra hand shake which is then added to every mail message that is sent. Our colleague Paul from the helpdesk has created a handy article on how to set this up. You only have to set it up once for the whole domain. So you do not have to deal with each separate mail account within the hosting.

SPAM filtering

SPAM filtering has been given a fair bit of an overhaul with the last update of SmarterMail. Still it is a battle that remains hard to win and a process that is never done. But if the messages are marked as MHP SPAM LOW through HIGH then this can be filtered in the settings within your web hosting. We recommend to forward MEDIUM and HIGH to an unwanted folder that you can create. Low can help you decide if you want them in your inbox or moved immediately. We do not recommend immediately deleting messages that are marked as SPAM.

Where is your email address?

An item that also has a lot of influence on the amount of unsollicited email is where you give your email address. If you give out your email address on obscure sites you will notice a lot coming in right away. Once you are on that list, you can't really get off it.
