Moving a website without downtime

The host of your website is an important choice and switching can often be a fun task. In this blog post we explain how you can do this with no or as little downtime as possible. And how this works at MijnHostingPartner.nl. Let's get started!

Moving your website hosting to another hosting provider requires a few things. The start of your move begins with the search for your new hosting provider. At MijnHostingPartner.nl we have extensive packages ready for you at a competitive price.

Take a look at our homepage to find a suitable package for your needs, or contact us via the online chat for advice. Once you have decided to switch, you can take stock of your website, note down the following data and perform the following actions: PHP / ASP version of your website used Database name and data Local export of the database to .

sql Local export of your website's files (easiest to compress into a .zip file) DNS records and some links to external services The reason you need to have your website local is to finalize the package with the other party. If you have everything ready locally, you won't have any unpleasant surprises.

Organize the move administratively

Of course, a move also involves administrative issues. The costs for a hosting package and a domain name cannot be transferred, so you will have to pay the new party again. It makes the most sense to change the hoster shortly before the end of the contract term. Otherwise you will pay twice as much for a longer period. However, do not do this too close to the end of the term, otherwise you will run out of time.

Also check the notice period with your old hosting provider to avoid any surprises. Once you have checked all this, you can place the order with the new hosting provider. Select the option to move only if you specify it, in our case Comes Later, select the move code. And start setting up your website and your emails.

Set up with the new party

Once you have placed your order and activated it, you can start setting it up. The export steps can then be carried out in reverse order. Set up your DNS records, e.g. your Google TXT record. Upload your website files, import your database and update the data.

And check the PHP or ASP version of your website. After you have uploaded your website, you can test it to see if everything works properly by customizing your host file with the IP address on the new host's side. Then test the website locally. This may sound difficult for beginners, but it's not. We've even created a YouTube video explaining how to do this very easily.

Once you have tested everything and the website with the new party is live, you can create the email addresses and import their data where necessary. This is easily done via our tool in Webmail, simply enter the IMAP host of the old situation, as well as the email address and current password. All your mails will then be imported.

Transfer name server when you are ready

Once you've gone through all the steps, it's time to transfer the nameservers and enter the transfer code. You can easily do this yourself in our customer panel, or you can always ask us for help. We will do this for you. After that, all you have to do is take care of the DNS update. Thanks to our global DNS solution, this is a fairly quick process, but it can take several hours depending on the domain name extension.

Fortunately, thanks to the steps above, you will have virtually no downtime. Are you ready to move your website too? Follow all the steps above and you'll have as little downtime as possible!
