Microsoft advises companies to stop using Internet Explorer
Everyone knows the program Internet Explorer, it is on your computer by default and you can easily access the Internet with it.Earlier this week, Microsoft posted a blog post advising companies to stop using Internet Explorer.
So in this blog post we will cover a bit of the history of Internet Explorer and why Microsoft advises against using it.For your Hosting it is still important that you test your website in every browser, this includes Internet Explorer.
The history of Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer was first launched in August 1995, it was then a component for Windows 95.However, at that time it was part of the Plus! package and in later versions it was made available as a free download.
Internet Explorer used to be the most widely used web browser. It peaked in 2003 when 95 percent of people used it.However, after this the use of the web browser decreased significantly, this has to do with the fact that Safari and Mozilla Firefox came out.In 2008 Google Chrome was released and since then it is the most used browser in the Netherlands, more than half of the Dutch use Google Chrome.
Why you should not use Internet Explorer anymore
4 years ago Microsoft switched to a new web browser, this web browser is also known as Microsoft Edge. This is the framework that Google uses for their web browser Google Chrome.
Most people have since moved away from Internet Explorer, however many companies still use Internet Explorer. The reason is that they often have web applications that they once made for Internet Explorer. This makes it easy for them to keep using Internet Explorer.
A good reason for companies to switch is that Internet Explorer does not support new web standards. This can be a security risk for you as a company, we personally always recommend switching to another browser.
The future of Edge
Since Microsoft switched to Microsoft Edge they do not support Internet Explorer anymore.Unfortunately Edge is only available on Windows 10 so if you are using Windows 7 or 8 you can't use it yet. However, in the coming weeks Microsoft is going to test an Edge version that is made in Chromium, this is the framework that Google Chrome also uses. This will make Microsoft Edge independent of Windows 10 and then you will be able to use it on Windows 7 and 8.
