Different types of spam

The chance that you have heard of it or had to deal with it is extremely high, every day there are spam mails sent. It can also happen that you receive spam mails on your hosting.

Spam mails can take different forms, think of normal spam, spoofing or phishing. In this blog post we will go through how you can recognize the different forms of spam.

Normal spam mails

This is probably the spam that most people are familiar with, normal spam. Often this ends up in your inbox as advertising or other unwanted mail, after all spam stands for Sending People Annoying Mail.

If you have your own domain name or website then you will often receive advertisements from a so-called web developer. They will ask you if you are interested in setting up a website.

Do not respond to this, often your data will be used by other spammers to send more spam. It is also possible that if you decide to go ahead with creating a website it will be a scam.

If you have to pay in advance you will lose your money immediately. It is also possible that they charge a lot for a very simple website.

Spoofing

A technique which is less used but more dangerous is called spoofing. This technique involves sending e-mails from your own e-mail address to yourself.

The email is pretended to be from your own address, often the content is easily recognized. These mails often state that they have personal data or videos.

If they claim to have a video of you, you will also often see that they claim to have hacked your webcam. If you do not have a webcam you will probably not care about this but it can be a bit of a scare.

They will ask for money or else they will make the video public. Fortunately, most of these mails are stopped by the spam filter.

Also with our email hosting this is almost always caught. If you do experience spoofing mails, it is advisable to block the sender immediately.

How do I recognize spoofing?

Besides knowing what spoofing is, it's also important to know how you can recognize it. Earlier we mentioned that you can recognize this kind of messages mainly by the content of it.

There are also other ways to distinguish these mails. For example, you can turn on the headers in the webmail, where you will see the real mail address from which it was sent.

After you have turned this on you can see exactly where the mail came from and block it further.

phishing

Another technique that is often used is phishing, where there is almost always an attempt to defraud. Often you will see phishing mails trying to get your bank details.

If you receive a phishing mail you will see that it is often about a so-called bank. It is often made to look as if your account is about to expire.

If you do not want this to happen you will have to give up your bank details. Never give up your data, banks will never contact you by mail or phone for your data.

If you receive this kind of mail you should always block the sender immediately and ignore the mail further. Again, you will see that the senders often come from a spam e-mail address.

If you have any questions about this, you can always see if there is a chat employee present. You can also create a ticket in the customer panel. Contact via Twitter or Facebook is also possible.
