Green hosting
Since 01-09-2011 MijnHostingPartner.nl is a green hoster and we are proud of it! From the beginning of its existence MHP has been very busy using only equipment that consumes as little power as possible. We also keep a close eye on the 'state of the art'. In addition, we have housed our servers at Telecity, which has a reputation for being at the forefront of green IT. Thanks to its initiatives in that area, these data centers are among the top 12 'Green IT Vendors' in the world. We find it important that energy efficiency is not only a point of attention for us, but also for the parties we do business with.
Green energy, CO2 compensation
In the field of green energy there are two alternatives in the market; 'compensation' and/or through 'green energy'.
In the case of compensation, the CO2 emissions of the site or server are offset by planting trees. In the case of 'green energy' you compensate the CO2 emissions of your site or server by purchasing for example wind energy.
We can inform you as a (potential) customer that MijnHostingPartner.nl uses both forms of compensation to offset CO2 emissions. So MHP invests in Wind Energy, but also through tree planting in Gelderland! We do that through The Green Web Foundation, a party that started in the Netherlands in 2006 with offering the greening of the internet. More information about the tree planting in question can be found via this link.
Green hosting
Nowadays, more and more attention is being paid to the environment. Green energy is something that will change the world (and is already changing it right now). Therefore, it is important that as much of the energy you use as possible comes from green energy. Chances are, you already use green energy at home from your energy supplier. Maybe you even drive an electric car already. You may be wondering what else you can do to improve the environment and give your children a good future. Did you know that it is also possible to purchase green hosting for your website? This means that your website will run on green energy from now on. And especially if you get a significant number of visitors to your website each month, that can make a big difference to the environment!
For a complete overview of all the questions you could possibly have about green hosting, please continue reading on the page. Everything on here will be covered about green hosting:
- What exactly is it?
- Why should you purchase green hosting?
- Does it make any difference to your website?
- Maybe you are already using green hosting - How do you find out?
- What to do if you want to run your website on green hosting
What is green hosting
As the name suggests, green hosting means that your website runs on green energy. This means that the servers of the hosting company are all running on green energy. Did you know that the Netherlands is #1 of all countries in the world when it comes to green hosting? In fact, the Netherlands has more than 246 hosting companies that use green energy. The goal is to make more than 80% of all sites green in 5 years. And you can contribute to that by choosing green hosting. But first a short explanation why it is important to choose green hosting...
Why green hosting
When you think of servers and hosting, images of large factory halls with all kinds of big computers and burning lights may come to mind. Think for example of the American hosting companies Hostgator and Bluehost, 2 of the largest hosting providers in the world. As you can imagine, all this hardware uses a lot of energy. This energy can of course be either grey or green. A study showed that all hosting in 2014 in the US consumed over 70 billion kilowatt hours. That's the equivalent of 20 million households! So you can imagine how much energy is used around the world for hosting.
For this reason, it is very important to choose green hosting - to save the environment. But did you know that there are even more advantages to choosing it? Benefits that don't have to do with the environment, but with your wallet. In fact, another recent study asked 543 adults in the U.S. what their stance was on green hosting websites. More than 60% indicated that green hosting could make the difference between an online purchase from a green web shop (which explicitly states on its website that they use green energy) versus one that runs on gray energy. In addition, 78% also indicated that they find it important that websites go for an environmentally friendly approach. 70% said that green hosting was an acceptable way for a website to get that ''green image''.
Differences for you as a website owner
So, as you have just read, there are 2 major advantages to green hosting:
- Your site is doing its bit to improve the environment and the future of the earth
- Using green hosting creates a green image among your consumers - and that's an extra reason for them to use your website or make a purchase from your web shop
So it is better for the environment and you will also get more customers because of it. If you are wondering what the catch is to green hosting, we have good news for you. Green hosting does not cost more than grey hosting. Whether you use green hosting depends on the hosting company you use to host your website. It can even be argued that green hosting costs less - with your green image, you will attract more clients and thus make more profit.
How to find out if your site is green hosted
Now that you know exactly what green hosting entails and the benefits you can enjoy when you choose to have a green website, it's important that you know how to find out if your website is already green - or not. Fortunately, there is an easy online tool that can check for you whether a site is using green or gray energy:
- In the directory you can see all hosting companies that are green. Go to "The Netherlands" and see if your hosting provider is listed. You will see that Mijnhostingpartner is also in this list.
- Or you can enter the address of your website on the home page. Within seconds you will get an answer whether the site is currently hosted green or grey!
