Where can you see what keywords you rank for?
Attracting visitors to your website is one of the main tasks of any webmaster. You want to share your website and the content it contains with as many people as possible. Whether it's your latest product line, your company's services, showcasing your best freelance projects, or your blog. However, there are few ways to do this;
Through social media inviting people to your website, through other websites or networks posting ads or news, through search engine advertising and finally through organic traffic from search. This last option is the one we will focus on in this blog post. And explain how you can see for which keywords your website is being displayed. And how you can expand on them and find new opportunities. Let's get started!
Keywords and hits
The keywords you rank for are an important part of any search engine optimization strategy, and it's important to keep track of them for many reasons. A website can be found for many thousands of keywords as the content grows. What page you are on is, of course, the second question. But that's a topic for another blog post.
The keywords you want to be found under sometimes don't match the keywords you actually appear under in search results. With every page you create and every article you publish, you have a chance to rank for new keywords, and you can be found for other things. The greater this chance, the more visitors you can attract through organic search traffic from each search engine.
To create a complete inventory of the keywords you rank for, you need to use a tool, as this cannot be done manually through Google. To crawl straight into the lion's den, let's take the official tool from Google itself and the official tools from the other search engine, Bing.
Google Search Console
Google Search Console is useful not only for keywords, but also for insight into your site's performance and other unique insights that only Google can show you. Like Google Discover Results. Google Search Console can also be linked to Google Analytics for even more information through Google Search Console Insights. We covered this in a recent blog post.
Google Search Console is easy to install and link to your website. To do this, simply add a TXT record in the DNS. Within a few hours, this can then already be found and linked to. There won't be much information the first time, but as you fill the site with content and it gets indexed, more and more data will be available. This includes the keywords you rank for.
The full list of keywords in Google Search Console goes up to the 1000 keywords displayed and can be viewed under Performance -> Search Results:
Here you can see the full list (up to 1000) of keywords your website ranks for. Most older websites with more than 50 pages will soon reach this limit. Therefore, there are also paid and free third-party external tools that can give you more insight into this. A second opinion in the other popular search engine Bing is also possible. But of course, you can't see the traffic from Google search engine there.
Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools is the counterpart to Google Search Console, but of course for Microsoft's search engine. Many people will only use Google for their searches, but a small 5% will still come from Bing. So these are not groundbreaking numbers that you will see in most cases. But they can still contribute to a thousand visitors per month to your website. Therefore, it can be used to keep an eye on what keywords Bing is indexing on your site. And can be used to check the sitemap.
Other tools that can be used
There are also paid tools that you can use to keep an eye on your search results and the overall performance of your website. The two most popular tools for this are Semrush and Ahrefs. These two tools give you the opportunity to know everything about your own website, but also about your competitors. These tools can be used for free to a certain extent, but soon invite you to sign up for a paid subscription. As a budding webmaster, this can be expensive, but if you are serious about exploring what is possible, or if you are further along in your webmaster career, this is a good choice to invest in. And can give you the edge you need over the competition.
Find more keywords to develop content for.
You can often see keywords and terms in the remote keywords from Google, Bing or other tools you use that you may not have had as a main target. But it's still a great way to create content. Often, you'll also see suggestions there about what content will best match your existing articles, giving you a higher chance of ranking faster in the search engine.
