Quarter of web shops unsecured
Quarter of the Dutch webshops unsecured
With a webshop there is a lot to think about, such as the domain name and what you are going to make the webshop with. In addition, you have to register the shop at the Chamber of Commerce and many other regulations. There is a large percentage of online shops that do not do this. An SSL certificate is a part of this. The SSL certificate ensures that data entered by your customers cannot be intercepted on public or home networks. HTTPS hosting ensures that the data is encrypted.
Research has shown that as many as 28 percent of online shops with a quality mark do not use a secure HTTPS connection. This is evident from research conducted by Dutch Internet Marketing. Dutch Internet Marketing started this research in response to a survey by the Dutch telephone directory. What the Telefoonboek was looking for was the total percentage of webshops and mail order companies that did not use a secure connection. The results were alarming. For almost three quarters of all web stores and mail order companies it is the case that no SSL certificate is used.
What Dutch Internet Marketing has focused on is the percentage that does have a web store certificate. That is 28% of all affiliated partners.
What does this mean?
It means that there is still a lot of data going through an unsecured connection. It is therefore more important than ever to check whether the connection is secure with the green lock in the bar. Also check what kind of certificate it is, a certificate from a trusted name like GeoTrust or Comodo has more value than a free certificate like Lets Encrypt. Everyone can use a certificate from Lets Encrypt for free and malicious people abuse this more and more.
