Which databases are included in your hosting package?

Databases play a central role for almost every website when it comes to storing content and configurations for your website. So a fast and connected database is a pillar that can make or break your website. In this blog post, we take a look at the different databases we offer in our hosting packages and which one is best to choose for your next project. And did you know that you can also easily switch your existing database? Let's get started!

MySQL 8

MySQL 8 is one of the most popular databases we offer, and for good reason. This version of MySQL offers numerous improvements and new features over previous versions. It offers better performance, more security and support for more complex queries. MySQL 8 also offers JSON support, enhanced replication options and optimized indexing capabilities. This database is suitable for almost all types of websites, from small blogs to large e-commerce platforms.

Why should you choose MySQL 8?

Excellent performance and stability Suitable for both small and large websites Supports advanced features such as JSON and replication Active community and regular updates

MariaDB

MariaDB is a popular fork of MySQL that was developed by the original developers of MySQL. The main advantage of MariaDB is that it is fully compatible with MySQL but often offers better performance, especially for complex queries. MariaDB is also seen as a more open and free variant of MySQL, with a focus on community-driven development. Many large companies and websites, such as Wikipedia, rely on MariaDB for its robustness and reliability. We recommend using MariaDB for your WordPress website. When you install WordPress via the customer panel, a MariaDB database is automatically used.

Why choose MariaDB?

Fully compatible with MySQL, therefore easy transition possible. Export your database via PHPmyAdmin, import it into MariaDB and customize your configuration string.

This is enough for 95% of projects to make the switch. Higher performance, especially for complex queries Open-source and community-supported Reliable and proven in large projects

MySQL 5

MySQL 5 is the older version and is no longer recommended for new projects. For existing projects, some developers and companies choose to use MySQL 5 because their applications are specifically based on this version and switching to MySQL 8 or MariaDB may require a change in code and configurations. However, in most cases this is not the case and moving to MySQL 8 or MariaDB can be done effortlessly.

Often with minimal impact on your website's code thanks to a PHP version upgrade. If you have not yet done so, we recommend that you plan this for yourself and your team at relatively short notice. MySQL 5 will die out in the future, which is why it is more than advisable to plan the changeover for yourself in the short term.

MS SQL (with .NET Core packages)

If you are working with .NET Core applications, MS SQL is the default database in our .NET hosting packages. Microsoft SQL Server, often abbreviated as MS SQL, is a powerful relational database specifically optimized for use within the Microsoft ecosystem. It offers robust security options, integration with other Microsoft products and excellent performance when processing large amounts of data.

MS SQL is ideal for companies that work with the .NET stack and require a database that integrates seamlessly with their software and infrastructure solutions. MS SQL databases are also available as an add-on to our other hosting packages, but at an additional cost. This cost is already included in our.NET hosting packages. The reason for this is that MS SQL is not open source, so we also charge license fees per database.

Why choose MS SQL?

Perfect integration with .NET Core and other Microsoft products Strong security and advanced data management features Excellent performance under heavy workloads Supports complex business logic and large amounts of data

Easy migration to a new database

If you are already using a database and want to switch to another database we offer, fortunately it's very easy. Thanks to PHPmyAdmin, which is available for MySQL 5, 8 and MariaDB, this is a simple task. If you want more control over this, we recommend a local connection to SQLyog. We also have several knowledge base articles available to guide you through this process step by step. If you want to outsource this work to us, this is also possible. You can request this via a ticket at the helpdesk. We will then make an appointment for you and carry out the work. We will let you know the costs in advance.

Which database is suitable for your project?

The choice of the right database depends heavily on the specific requirements of your project.

If you want to work with a PHP-based content management system, we recommend working with MariaDB in almost all cases, as it offers the best possibilities and ensures the fastest possible database. Take a look at the documentation of the system or ecosystem that is recommended to be used and check from there which database is best suited for your project. Do you still have questions? Then you can contact us at any time via the online chat or the ticket system.
