Adding multiple domains to your hosting

Almost every company, start-up, freelancer and hobby blogger starts with a domain name and a hosting package. As you run your website for longer, multiple domain names are often added to expand your portfolio. Be it for yourself, for customers or for friends and family.

With the hosting packages from MijnHostingPartner.nl, you can easily add multiple domain names to one package with most packages. In this blog post, we look at how this works and how you can get the most out of your hosting package.

Domain names are always added organically

We see it with almost everyone who hosts with us for a longer period of time: domain names are always added after the first domain name has been registered. This can happen for many reasons, but often the additional domain names are variations or other extensions of your first domain name. For example, if your company uses demodomain.nl and you want to expand to Belgium, you can only do this with your .nl domain name.

However, it is often advisable to also register the .be domain name, not only to protect the brand, but also to adapt your website to the Belgian market. Here, certain nuances in the text and other expressions are often appropriate.

The same also applies to websites that you want to create in English, then a .eu domain name is often the right choice for the European market, or the best-known domain name extension, .com. In addition to domain name extensions, domain names often have variations on your original domain name. Small variations that your visitors often use by mistake, such as demodomain.nl from the earlier example demodomain.nl. Or simply a common typo that users use. However, it is always questionable whether you want to pay domain name registration fees every year just because you made a typo.

Finally, there are also domain names that you register for specific projects or actions, for example for a temporary project for which you want to set up your own website. Once you get into the world of web hosting and websites, there will always be people who want to get involved, especially if they can benefit from your previous experience in the initial stages.

How does ordering multiple domains for 1 package work?

Ordering multiple domains is easily done by logging into your existing account at MijnHostingPartner.nl and then only ordering the registration of one domain name.

You can then report this via the chat or via a ticket and we will place the domain name for you under your existing package. We always require this to be done through us, as this has been abused in the past when we left this as a blank check. After adding the domain name, you often just have to wait for the DNS update, which can take a few hours. After that, your domain name will be fully usable as usual.

Set up your new domain name as you wish

The new domain name in your package can then be used as you wish, and this can be easily set up in your hosting package. When you log in to the customer panel or directly via an FTP account, you will see it listed in your directory. The website is also created separately and can therefore be managed separately in terms of PHP version, app pool (in the case of .NET packages) and any other settings you can make for it.

So you don't have to worry about your original website being affected. You can also install WordPress within the customer panel with one click, using any other CMS, following the instructions in our knowledge base.

Beware of duplicate content on multiple domain names

If you opt for an extension such as .be on your .nl domain, it is often advisable to watch out for duplicate content, as the same content on two domain names can cause problems for your search engine ranking without you knowing about it. And if you intend to do this, it is advisable to read up on the subject of the canonical tag/URL.

With this tag, you can show that the two domain names are related and therefore should not be considered duplicate content. You can also link other domain name extensions or minor variations of your domain name to your main domain name. This can easily be done via the customer panel with a 301 redirect.

You then forward the entire link value to your main domain, which can also be desirable in many situations. Have you registered multiple domain names in addition to your original domain name? Let us know via social media!
