Different FTP programs
An important part of your website is the files, because this is the core of your website.Without files, your website will not run.
You can place files in your web space in different ways, you can use a file manager but also FTP.FTP stands for file transfer protocol and is used to transfer files from your computer to the server.
You have several programs for this and we are going to go over some of them in this blog post.
Filezilla
The most well-known and used FTP program is FileZilla and this program we also recommend to use.This has to do with the fact that the program is easy to use and you can get started right away.
Filezilla takes up very little space and is easy to use.You only need to fill in the server name and the FTP data and then you can use it.
After this you will immediately see the files that are on the server and so you can easily upload and download files.If you want to make a backup you can also do that here by dragging the files to a local folder.
Smart FTP
A program that is not free but works extremely well is SmartFTP.What struck us immediately is that it looks very much like a Microsoft program but this is not the case.
SmartFTP is a program developed by SmartSoft ltd.This is a program that is offered for free for home use or non profit organizations.
Since 2008 this is no longer the case but a free trial version is available.You can use this program for 30 days to test things out.
After this period, licenses are available from 40 euros per year or a one-time fee of 80 euros.The main advantage of this program is that it looks very modern and if you are familiar with other Microsoft products you will have no problems.
WinSCP
Another free program that is exclusively available for Windows devices is WinSCP.This is a free open source FTP program that is easy to use.
The advantage to open source is that you can also apply changes to the code of the program if desired.This is especially nice if you are a hobby programmer or a student and you want to make your own changes.
Another advantage is that the people who are interested in this program develop it further to find and fix errors and leaks.If your server supports it you can even use the (outdated) SCP protocol if the other party supports it.
Sandvox
If you are using a Macbook then all of these programs for Windows are not that interesting.Fortunately on a Macbook you can use an FTP program called Sandvox.
This is a program specially developed for mac os devices with which you can make use of an FTP connection.However, it is also possible to use FileZilla for Mac OS, which we basically recommend.
