WordPress through the years

WordPress is the most well-known content management system in use today.Over the years it has improved and become more elaborate, making it easier to use on your hosting.
Because it has changed and improved so much over the years we thought it would be interesting to take a look at how it has changed. In this blog post we are going to go through how WordPress has changed over the years.

The beginning

The foundation of WordPress itself begins in 2001 with a programmer named Michel Valdrighi. He created a mini blogging program called B2 in 2001 however he stopped doing this fairly quickly.
Michel stopped doing this mainly because he was focusing on other projects. The next development of this took place in 2003 when a programmer named Matt Mullenweg used the software.
This was a student who used the software to post pictures online and sometimes to create a blog.In one of these blog posts he had also indicated that he would like to expand the B2 project.
He started this project together with Mike Little and that's how WordPress started, the first official version came out in 2003.It was known pretty quickly that this would be a hit and the team grew rapidly for that reason.

WordPress 1.0

The first official WordPress version came out on January 3, 2004 and was a big step forward. With this version it was possible to set search engine friendly perma links.
Not only that but you could also add multiple categories to a blog post. This was possible but you had to use the perma link function.
Back then it was already easy to install WordPress but they had made it even easier. They had made it possible to edit the wp-config file via the web browser.

WordPress 2.0

On January 3, 2004, WordPress 1.0 had been released and within a little less than 1 year, the second version of WordPress had already come out.In fact, they released a new WordPress called WordPress 2 on December 31, 2005.
In doing so, they completely redesigned the admin environment. They not only improved the functionality but also the user interface.
This made it not only faster but also a lot more user friendly. They also added WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editing, so you had the ability to preview the page.

WordPress 3.0

After 5 years of using WordPress 2, they released WordPress 3 on June 17, 2010.In doing so they introduced a new default theme called Twenty Ten.
Another feature that has been added is that is bulk updating of your installed themes. They also added the ability to run multiple WordPress websites from one installation.
This was an amalgamation of WordPress MU and stands for multi site. If you weren't using this then you don't have to worry about this either.

WordPress 4.0

On September 4, 2014 WordPress 4.0 had been released and changes to the database structure applied. Here they have made editing your media content a lot more manageable.
In this update they have added a grid layout for your photos which makes it a lot clearer. This is the grid layout that is still in WordPress today.
This is not only the case for the photos in WordPress but it has also been added when installing plug-ins.This has made it a lot easier to install the plugins you want.

WordPress 5.0

WordPress 5.0 is the latest version of WordPress and again they have applied major changes. In doing so, they have applied a new editor called Guttenberg.
This is a block editor that makes it a lot easier for users to edit content.Fortunately, as a user you were not forced to use this and you still have the option to use the old editor.
With this version, Managed WordPress hosting has also become increasingly popular because you do not have to do so much maintenance. This is because everything is updated automatically so you do not have to do this yourself anymore.
